Controversy Erupts as SMHS Clash with Jefferson Demos in Playoff Game

The South Medford High School (SMHS) Panthers faced off against the Portland Jefferson Democrats (Demos) at Spiegelberg Stadium on Friday night, November 3, 2023. The excitement quickly turned to drama during the second quarter of play, when a pivotal interception by a SMHS player resulted in a commanding 34-0 lead for the Panthers before halftime.

Tempers flared on the field when a Demos player allegedly ripped off the helmet of an SMHS defensive player after the two made contact shortly after the play, and delivered a blow to his face. The incident was confirmed by Medford Alert with the family of the SMHS player involved. The officials were able to eventually separated the two players. Due to their status as minors, the names of the individuals involved are being withheld. Fortunately, there were no reports of serious injuries resulting from the altercation.

The situation escalated further as several players and coaches from the Demos left the bench and entered the field. The game was initially paused as school officials and rules personnel attempted to address the unfolding events. Ultimately, the decision was made to suspend the game, and both teams were instructed to contact the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) governing board for the ultimate resolution of this matchup.

An OSAA official provided the following statement to Medford Alert: “We are still working through the situation with the schools involved and the officials association.”

Medford Alert reached out to representatives of the Medford School District for comment, and as of now, we are awaiting their response. We will continue to closely monitor this situation and provide updates as new information becomes available.
