Second Annual Fall Street Scene Highlights Local Pacific Island Culture

On October 29, 2023, hundreds of local families came together to celebrate the Second Annual Fall Street Scene at North Medford High School.

The atmosphere was filled with excitement as dozens of booths distributed candy and prizes to enthusiastic children. For those craving a Halloween-themed adventure, the “Trunk-or-Treat” area featured an array of creatively decorated cars that delighted visitors of all ages.

Medford Police personnel were present, spreading cheer by distributing badges and goodies to the young attendees. The Medford Fire Department, not to be outdone, allowed kids to tour one of their fire engines and engaged in discussions about fire safety, educating the community’s youngest members.

However, the highlight of the evening was the captivating performances of authentic Pacific Island cultural dances and chants. These performances ranged from young children to adults, captivating the audience with their vibrant display of heritage and tradition. Event host Savanah Sanitoa led the kids in a spirited “Cheehoo,” explaining that this energetic cheer is used to celebrate and support performers.

Medford Alert, was honored to be part of the festivities and eagerly distributed pounds of candy to children who were dressed in their Halloween best. Savanah Sanitoa, a proud member of the Pacific Islander Community, expressed her commitment to creating a safe and nurturing space for children to foster creativity and build strong relationships within the community.

She emphasized the importance of giving back and celebrated the event as a platform for the fusion of culture and family values. In her words: “As a member of the Pacific Islander Community, our #1 goal is to ensure our kids have a safe space to be creative and build strong relationships. One way to ensure that happens is by getting out into the community and giving back without expecting anything in return. This event was a great platform to showcase our love of culture with our love of family. As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child. Special thank you to all our vendors, clubs, families, and friends who tabled a booth or setup their car. Thank you to our community for coming out to support our kids because this event would not have been possible without each of you!”

This incredible community event was made possible through the generous sponsorship of the North Medford Pacific Islander Club, Student Government, and Samoa Pacific Development Corporation.

The Second Annual Fall Street Scene at North Medford High School truly exemplified the unity and vibrancy of the Medford community, celebrating diversity, culture, and the joy of giving back to the next generation.
