Salem, Oregon- May marks Wildfire Awareness Month and Oregon is gearing up to confront the annual wildfire threat. While the state typically sees its heaviest wildfire activity during the summer, fires can strike during any season, including spring. Keep Oregon Green, in collaboration with federal, state, tribal, and local fire agencies, is intensifying efforts to raise awareness about wildfire prevention measures.
The initiative aims to educate the public on steps to avert careless, unwanted wildfires as the summer approaches. One key focus is encouraging Oregonians to establish defensible space around residences and outbuildings, safeguarding lives, property, and the scenic beauty that defines the region.
Statistics reveal that human activity contributes significantly to Oregon’s wildfire burden, with over 70% of wildfires being human-caused. These incidents often stem from escaped debris burn piles or sparks generated by gas-powered equipment and vehicles.
During the 2023 fire season, the Oregon Department of Forestry recorded 823 wildfires ignited by people, scorching 6,197 acres of land. The repercussions of even a single spark in dry vegetation can be swift and severe, impacting lives, personal property, and Oregon’s cherished natural landscapes.
Before venturing into Oregon’s outdoors this summer, it’s crucial for individuals to check with the relevant agency or land manager for any fire restrictions or bans. Visitors are advised to acquaint themselves with these regulations before lighting campfires or using equipment that could trigger a wildfire.
Amidst these efforts, the iconic Smokey Bear turns 80 this year, continuing his longstanding campaign to prevent human-caused wildfires. Smokey’s enduring message resonates with those who prioritize responsible behavior to safeguard against wildfires.
In line with this, Keep Oregon Green’s 2024 summer wildfire prevention campaign, “Put Your Smokey Hat On,” urges the public to consider the consequences of their actions and take proactive steps to prevent wildfire ignitions.
