MEDFORD, Ore. (Sep. 4, 2026) — The Medford DMV is once again offering Commercial Driver’s License skills testing after a five-year pause, giving prospective commercial drivers in Southern Oregon a new local option to complete the required behind-the-wheel examination.
The DMV office at 987 Medford Center Drive currently is offering one CDL skills test per week at 8:30 a.m. Fridays. Appointments can be scheduled through DMV2U between seven and 30 days in advance. The CDL skills test fee is $145.
“We’re excited to be able to offer skills testing to prospective CDL holders in our community,” said Jonah Kopp, DMV South Region manager. “Medford DMV is the only office south of Eugene administering CDL tests, besides third-party companies. We anticipate this will be a popular service.”
The return of testing follows a five-year suspension that was partly attributed to staffing limitations and a lack of adequate parking and testing space at the Medford location.
Under the new arrangement, safety checks and initial maneuvers for CDL testing will be conducted at the Oregon Department of Transportation’s Central Point maintenance yard at 4141 Hamrick Road, a few miles from the DMV office.
Applicants seeking an Oregon CDL must pass a written knowledge test to obtain a Commercial Learner Permit, followed by a three-part behind-the-wheel skills test.
The Oregon DMV also has changed its rules regarding limited-term, or non-domiciled, commercial credentials. As of March 16, the agency no longer issues or reinstates limited-term CDLs and Commercial Learner Permits.
The Medford DMV hopes to eventually hire and train a second CDL examiner, which would allow the office to increase the number of appointments available to customers.
The return of testing is expected to provide an additional option for Southern Oregon residents seeking commercial driving credentials, particularly in an area where CDL testing locations are limited.
