CENTRAL POINT, Ore. (Sep. 3, 2026) — An 18-year-old Central Point resident is facing a potentially yearslong recovery after suffering a severe spinal cord injury in August while jumping from the Swinging Bridge on the Illinois River.
Hunter Clevenger suffered a spinal burst fracture in the incident and underwent an emergency spinal surgery that lasted about eight hours, according to his family. Clevenger is now in stable condition following the surgery, but doctors have warned that his injuries are serious and that he may not be able to walk again.
Clevenger’s family is now preparing for an uncertain recovery that could include extensive hospital care, rehabilitation, medical equipment and other long-term expenses.
“Healing could take years,” a family friend said.
Before the injury, Clevenger had recently moved out on his own and taken the step of starting his own business. He was working to build a future for himself when the injury abruptly left him unable to work.
His family said everyday expenses, including rent, truck payments, utilities and other living costs, will continue while he focuses on recovering.
A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help Clevenger and his family cover expenses associated with his recovery. As of Thursday afternoon, the fundraiser was approaching halfway to its $50,000 goal.
The Volt Foundation also is organizing a fundraising car wash to support Clevenger’s recovery.
The event is scheduled for Sept. 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Oregon Eye & Vision Center in Central Point.
Organizers are asking community members to attend the car wash, contribute to the fundraiser or share information about Clevenger’s situation.
Clevenger’s family said they are grateful for the support they have received as he begins what could be a lengthy recovery.
“Every donation, no matter the amount, will help us navigate the days and months ahead and give him the support he needs as he begins his recovery,” the family said. “We are incredibly grateful for every prayer, kind message, donation and share.”
