During South Medford’s Columbia Cup game against Jefferson, players from both teams will be facing suspensions after a heated altercation led to the game ending prematurely. The Panthers were dominating the Democrats with a score of 34-0 and only seven minutes and two seconds remaining in the second quarter when the incident occurred.
The altercation in question initially involved two players, and it quickly escalated, with members from both teams leaving the sideline and entering the field. In light of the situation, event officials made the difficult decision to call off the game to ensure the safety and sportsmanship of all involved.
Over the weekend, both South Medford and Jefferson high schools collaborated with the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) to address the situation. After careful consideration, it was announced on Monday afternoon that the Columbia Cup game was officially over, with the final score locked in at 34-0 in favor of the Panthers.
While the game’s conclusion is now official, the fallout from the altercation remains to be seen. Players involved in the fight are expected to face immediate game suspensions.
OSAA official initial statement read as follows:
“Following an altercation between a player from each team, and in consultation with coaches, athletic directors, event management and game officials, the decision was made to terminate the game with 7:02 remaining in the 2nd quarter and South Medford leading 34-0. Per NFHS Rule 9-8-1, any substitute leaving the team area during a fight is ejected. The OSAA is working directly with each school to identify the players that left the team area during the fight and they will be considered to be ejected from the contest, including suspension from the next contest.”
UPDATE: The Medford School District released the following statement on the matter: “The Medford School District values good sportsmanship and remains committed to that shared value. As per OSAA guidance, the OSAA in partnership with our athletic leadership staff will now determine which players left the bench during last Friday’s game to continue our playoff run in good faith. Players found to have left the bench will be suspended from the next game. South will continue to work with the team to engage in a positive team culture both on and off the field.”
