
Gold Hill, Oregon- A 26-year-old Gold Hill man died Monday after his vehicle plunged into the Rogue River in Jackson County, authorities said.
The crash occurred at 2:18 p.m. Monday on Highway 99 near milepost 12, according to the Oregon State Police. Preliminary reports indicate the southbound Subaru Legacy, operated by Cody Austin Jenkins, veered across the northbound lanes, broke through a fence, and entered the river.
No occupants were observed escaping the submerged vehicle. Jenkins was declared dead at the scene. There were no other occupants in the car.
The Jackson County Search and Rescue Team helped remove the vehicle from the river. Highway traffic was not affected during the on-scene investigation.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Oregon State Police said the Collision Reconstruction Unit, which specializes in fatal and serious injury crashes, is involved.
OSP was assisted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson County Search and Rescue, Rogue River Fire Department, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
