Medford School District Superintendent Announces Resignation

Medford, Oregon- Medford School District Superintendent Bret Champion has announced his resignation, effective June 30. In a statement, Champion described the decision as a difficult one, citing concerns over the district’s focus amid ongoing challenges.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce my decision to resign,” Champion said. “This was not an easy choice, but over the past year, it has become increasingly clear that while our community expresses a desire to prioritize students, too often, a small, loud contingency has continued to shift our focus to adult-centered issues.”

Champion emphasized the need for change and encouraged community members to take an active role in shaping the district’s future. “You – this community – have the power to impact the future of our school district,” he said. “I challenge you to GET ENGAGED in civil and constructive conversations on how to support our most precious resource – our students.”

Reflecting on his tenure, Champion highlighted several accomplishments, including navigating the COVID-19 pandemic, reopening schools, and expanding educational opportunities. “We opened Oakdale Middle School and Innovation Academy and implemented the first-that-we-know-of-in-Oregon ELA curriculum,” he noted. “We’ve expanded opportunities for students in fine arts and STEAM and in health careers.”

Champion also pointed to efforts to improve preschool access and strengthen school safety measures. “We have the best crew of principals I’ve ever seen, and we have prioritized and implemented school safety and security in a way that has drawn positive national attention,” he said.

Expressing gratitude to educators, staff, and students, Champion credited the district’s progress to their dedication. “These achievements are a testament to the dedication, passion, and resilience of our educators, staff, board, and community members who truly put students first,” he said.

Champion concluded his statement by recognizing students as a source of inspiration. “Some of my greatest inspiration has come from our students themselves,” he said. “Our greatest hope always lies with you.”

Champion and his wife, Marcee, have lived in Southern Oregon for six years. “I have been deeply honored and privileged to lead this district,” he said. “Marcee and I have loved making Southern Oregon our home.”

The Medford School Board has not yet announced plans for selecting a new superintendent.
