Medford, Oregon- With the national elections approaching on November 5, the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is reminding campaigns and their supporters of the regulations surrounding the placement of political signs along state highways. ODOT emphasizes that political signs placed on the state highway right-of-way will be removed in compliance with state regulations.
According to ODOT, only official traffic control devices are permitted within highway right-of-ways. Unauthorized signs, including political ones, may distract drivers or obscure important road safety messages. Any signs placed improperly will be removed and held at the nearest ODOT district maintenance office for 30 days. Individuals can contact their local ODOT office to reclaim them during this period.
In addition to the highway right-of-way restrictions, signs are also prohibited from being attached to trees, utility poles, fence posts, or natural features along the roadside. The regulations also extend to areas within view of designated scenic areas, where signs are strictly prohibited.
For those unsure about the boundaries of a highway right-of-way, ODOT advises checking with local district offices or using the department’s interactive map, which can help clarify property limits. Additionally, local municipalities may impose their own regulations on sign placement, making it important for campaigns to verify rules at both state and local levels.
Political signs are allowed on private property within view of state highways, but there are specific restrictions in place. Signs must adhere to size limitations of 12 square feet unless a variance is obtained, allowing for signs up to 32 square feet. Flashing lights, animated features, or anything resembling official highway signs is strictly prohibited. Furthermore, signs are not allowed in scenic corridors, and no payment or compensation may be exchanged for the placement or message of temporary political signs visible from state highways.
For more information on the regulations and the Oregon Advertising Sign Program, ODOT provides resources at cms.oregon.gov/odot/hwy/signprogram.
As the election date approaches, ODOT is urging campaigns to follow these guidelines to ensure road safety and compliance with state laws.
