“Less Lethal” Rounds Used to Apprehend East Medford Robbery Suspect

A reported theft at “The Store” within the Grandview Shopping complex escalated into an armed robbery, prompting a swift response from law enforcement. The incident unfolded yesterday at approximately 3:30 PM, culminating in about an hour long standoff.

The suspect, armed during the shoplifting incident, fled the scene, triggering a pursuit by Medford Police officers. Witnesses also informed law enforcement about the armed individual, leading to heightened concerns. The pursuit concluded when the suspect sought refuge in an apartment located at 2115 Roberts Road, in northeast Medford.

Officers evacuated nearby apartment residences and implemented security measures at a nearby school. MPD Lieutenant Kirkpatrick told Medford Alert that School Resource Officers placed North Medford High School into a “Secure” mode, as a precaution.

Law enforcement, recognizing the potential danger posed by the armed suspect, brought in specialized units, including members of the SWAT Team. Although a full-team activation was not initiated, Crisis Negotiators were also deployed to help facilitate a peaceful resolution.

The suspect finally exited the apartment. However, the individual failed to comply with the commands of the officers on the scene. In response, a 40mm “Less Lethal” was deployed twice to gain compliance. Only after the second deployment was the suspect successfully taken into custody.

During the course of the incident, officers successfully recovered a handgun believed to be in the possession of the suspect during the original crime.

The collaborative efforts of law enforcement, including tactical units and negotiators, played a pivotal role in resolving this situation.

Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the events leading up to the armed robbery and subsequent standoff. There were no reported injuries to officers or witnesses.
