ODF Crews on Heightened Alert After Lightning Storms

Last night, the ODF Southwest Oregon District experienced a notable surge in lightning activity, primarily concentrated in Josephine County, extending north to Grants Pass. In Jackson County, three lightning strikes were detected, all occurring in the far northeast corner of the county.

In response to the potential fire risks, firefighters have been actively patrolling these regions since 1 a.m., but fortunately, no fire starts were found. However, they are currently en route to investigate a report of a small gray column of smoke near Jack Creek in Josephine County, east of Hugo.

A reconnaissance flight was scheduled for 9 a.m., aiming to continue the search for any additional fires resulting from these recent storms.

As of this morning, four strikes have been recorded in Jackson County, east of Medford, and weather forecasts predict the possibility of more thunderstorms throughout the day. Citizens are urged to remain aware and report any signs of smoke or fire in these locations immediately by dialing 911.

In light of the heightened natural risk of fires caused by lightning, the public is urged to assist firefighters by adhering to all current regulations specifically designed to mitigate human-caused fires. Your cooperation and compliance can make a significant difference in safeguarding our community and natural landscapes.
