Since the thunderstorm rolled into the Rogue Valley yesterday afternoon, ODF says their firefighters have been responding to reports of smoke and fire in lightning strike areas. This morning, there are five (5) fires in various stages that crews are responding to or continuing to work on across the ODF Southwest Oregon District.

In Josephine County, ODF firefighters have been working overnight with local and federal partners on three fires. At this time, they are all lined and in various stages of mop-up. The Valley Heights Fire located northwest of Selma, was caught at just over half an acre.
The Hayes Hill Fire, located just east of Highway 199 between Selma and Wonder, was caught at less than a quarter of an acre. The third fire, the Slate Creek Fire, located east of Wonder, was stopped at just over half an acre. Resources are currently on scene of all of these incidents working on mop up operations. A fourth report of smoke southwest of Williams has not be located at this time.
In Jackson County, ODF is currently responding to two reports of smoke and fire this morning. The first is the Eagle Drive Fire, located in the hills north of Sams Valley.
It’s estimated to be a quarter of an acre. The second report is of smoke in the area of Holcomb Springs, northwest of Sams Valley. Both of these locations are difficult to access and firefighters are currently hiking in to these locations.
The U.S. Forest Service- Rogue River Siskiyou National Forest will be conducting a reconnaissance flight this morning over the areas where lightning struck, including ODF-protected land.
ODF says they will continue to work on these incidents and be ready to respond to any additional reports of fire.
