PHOENIX, Ore. (May. 13, 2026) — A 5-year-old Bullmastiff named Odessa is waiting patiently at the Jackson County Animal Shelter for a calm home where she can settle into a life of companionship, soft blankets and sunny lounging spots.
Shelter staff describe Odessa as a mellow and gentle dog whose quiet demeanor stands out from more energetic shelter animals. Rather than barking at visitors or demanding attention, Odessa prefers to quietly observe from a comfortable spot before slowly warming up to new people.
The large mastiff mix arrived at the shelter as a stray about a month ago, but workers say she quickly demonstrated good manners and signs of previous training. Odessa already knows commands including “sit,” “shake” and “lay down.”
Though initially shy and somewhat aloof, staff say Odessa forms strong bonds once trust is established. They describe her as a loyal companion who prefers calm interactions and often follows trusted people from room to room, content simply being nearby.
Odessa requires moderate exercise and enjoys relaxing in the sun, according to shelter staff, who say she thrives in peaceful environments with patient owners willing to let her build confidence at her own pace.
Because of her reserved personality, shelter workers recommend a calm introduction process that allows Odessa to approach affection on her own terms. They say she responds best to gentle energy and quiet companionship.
A meet-and-greet is recommended for families with other dogs to ensure compatibility with potential canine housemates.
Odessa is currently available for adoption at the Jackson County Animal Shelter, located at 5595 S. Pacific Highway in Phoenix. The shelter is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Walk-ins are welcome and appointments are not required.
