Medford Police Investigating Hoax Threat Involving South Medford High School

MEDFORD, Ore. (May. 13, 2026) — The Medford Police Department is investigating what officials say appears to be a hoax threat involving South Medford High School after a student reported their school email account had been compromised.

Police said the incident began shortly after midnight Sunday, May 10, when officers were contacted by a juvenile student at approximately 12:15 a.m. The student reported believing their school email account had been hacked and used to send an email referencing a threat toward South Medford High School.

According to investigators, the email was widely shared online, prompting concern throughout the community and generating multiple calls to Emergency Communications of Southern Oregon.

Medford police said detectives have been investigating the incident since it was first reported and are continuing to work with staff from the Medford School District to gather additional information and identify those responsible, if possible.

Authorities said threats involving schools are treated with the highest level of seriousness. Officers were deployed to provide additional security at the campus, and school staff coordinated with law enforcement to conduct a sweep of the school before students arrived Monday morning.

Police said School Resource Officers and additional patrol officers were present at South Medford High School on Monday and will continue maintaining an increased presence throughout the week. Officials noted that all secondary public schools within the city have a full-time School Resource Officer assigned to campus.

Investigators said that, based on the information currently available, they do not believe there is a credible threat to student safety.

No arrests or suspects have been announced, and police said the investigation remains ongoing.
