Dry Second Half of January Leaves Medford Below Normal for Precipitation

MEDFORD, Ore. (Feb. 1, 2026) — January brought a mix of wet early-season weather and prolonged dry conditions to Medford, with temperatures finishing slightly below average and precipitation well under normal, according to the National Weather Service climate summary.

The warmest temperature recorded during the month was 62 degrees on Jan. 2, well below the January record high of 73 set in 2024. The coldest temperature was 20 degrees on Jan. 25, far from the record low of minus 3 degrees set in 1930. Overall, Medford’s average temperature for the month was 40.0 degrees — 0.4 degrees below the normal average of 40.4.

Precipitation totaled 1.05 inches, about 1.67 inches below the normal January average of 2.72 inches. The city recorded six days with measurable precipitation of at least 0.01 inches, compared with a typical 14 days, and four days with at least 0.10 inches, three fewer than normal.

No snow fell in Medford during January, leaving the city 1 inch below its average snowfall for the month. The record January snowfall remains 22.6 inches, set in 1930.

Winds were generally light, averaging less than 5 mph for the month. The strongest sustained wind reached 29 mph from the south on Jan. 2, while the highest gust peaked at 44 mph from the southeast the same day.

NWS Medford forecasters said January weather unfolded in two distinct halves. Early in the month, a series of systems brought rain and mountain snow, but conditions turned dry after high pressure settled in around Jan. 9. Only light rain was observed late in the month, including on Jan. 27 and Jan. 29, with little impact inland.

The persistent high pressure and dry air also contributed to several cold nights, helping keep monthly temperatures slightly below normal, meteorologists said.
