Near White City, Oregon- Two Eagle Point residents were killed and two others critically injured early Saturday when a pickup truck crashed off Highway 140 and rolled into a creek in Jackson County, authorities said.
According to Oregon State Police, troopers responded at about 3:50 a.m. Saturday to the single-vehicle crash near milepost 9. A preliminary investigation found that a westbound Ford F-350, driven by a 17-year-old male from Eagle Point, failed to negotiate a curve, broke through a guardrail, and rolled into an adjacent creek.
The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger, identified as 18-year-old Mitchel Frank Thorpe of Eagle Point, was also not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene, police said.
Two additional passengers — a 17-year-old male from Eagle Point and a 17-year-old female from Medford — were taken to a nearby hospital with critical injuries.
Investigators said impairment and speed are considered primary factors in the crash. The highway was partially closed for about an hour during the on-scene investigation.
The Oregon State Police were assisted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Eagle Point Police Department, Medford Police Department, Lake Creek Fire, Fire District 3, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
The Oregon State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit, which investigates fatal and serious injury crashes across the state, is leading the investigation.
