Medford, Oregon- A Jackson County man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after being found guilty of rape and assault following a jury trial, the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday.
Maitland-Anthony Kamaunu, born Aug. 9, 1995, was convicted of Rape in the First Degree and Assault in the Fourth Degree after a two-day jury trial last week.
At sentencing, Senior Deputy District Attorney Samantha Olson and Deputy District Attorney Samantha Blount recommended that Kamaunu receive the maximum sentence permitted under Oregon law. Jackson County Circuit Court Judge Laura Cromwell followed that recommendation and sentenced Kamaunu to 144 months in the Oregon Department of Corrections, followed by 20 years of post-prison supervision.
“The first 100 months of that prison sentence is pursuant to Measure 11 and will be served day-for-day,” the District Attorney’s Office said. Kamaunu was also ordered to register as a sex offender as part of the sentence.
Prosecutors said the charges stemmed from an incident in which the victim stayed with Kamaunu for several days while she looked for permanent housing. On the final night of her stay, she was sexually assaulted by Kamaunu. The victim later sought medical treatment for injuries sustained during the assault and reported the incident to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office several weeks later after being encouraged by family members.
According to the District Attorney’s Office, Kamaunu has a violent criminal history and was already required to register as a sex offender at the time of the assault. His prior convictions include Coercion, Assault in the Fourth Degree, Sexual Abuse in the Second Degree, Rape in the Third Degree, and Sodomy in the Third Degree.
