Medford, Oregon- The City of Medford is in the early stages of exploring the potential development of a regional medical school campus aimed at training and retaining physicians in the Rogue Valley and surrounding areas.
During a City Council Study Session held on June 11, consulting firm Tripp Umbach presented the results of a market evaluation and feasibility study commissioned by the city in fall 2024. The study, funded through Council Community Initiative Funds, assessed whether the region’s healthcare needs, infrastructure, and community readiness could support a medical education program based in Medford.
Medford currently serves as a regional medical hub for approximately 600,000 people across Southern Oregon and Northern California. Despite this role, the feasibility study revealed a significant shortage of physicians in the area, with rural and underserved communities facing the greatest challenges. The report also highlighted persistent health disparities and emphasized the need for improved access to care and a more stable, locally trained healthcare workforce.
Among four models analyzed, the study recommended the establishment of a regional M.D. campus as the most viable path forward. This option would involve partnering with an established medical institution. Based on their analysis, Tripp Umbach identified Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) as a potential partner. OHSU, which currently does not operate a regional campus, has expressed preliminary interest and remains involved in ongoing discussions.
As part of the feasibility study, Tripp Umbach conducted interviews with healthcare and community leaders throughout Southern Oregon. Stakeholders expressed support for the development of a medical school and highlighted the importance of aligning medical education with regional workforce needs, expanding residency training programs, and strengthening collaboration between healthcare and educational institutions.
Following the June 11 presentation, the City reconvened the stakeholder group to review the findings, consider potential next steps, and identify key questions that need further exploration.
Although the process remains in its early stages, the initiative represents an initial step toward evaluating how Medford could support medical education and address long-standing challenges in regional health care delivery and workforce sustainability.
