Medford, Oregon- Several thousand people gathered along E. McAndrews Road in east Medford on Saturday as part of the nationwide “No Kings” protest, an event organized in response to concerns about the concentration of political power and the future of democratic institutions in the United States.
Stretching more than half a mile between Biddle Road and Crater Lake Avenue, the demonstration featured participants holding American flags and signs with messages such as “No Kings,” “Preserve the Constitution,” and “Power to the People.” There were also a number of participants showing support for issues ranging from “Free Palestine,” “Stand with Ukraine,” “Down with the Patriarchy,” and “LGBTQ” rights. The Medford rally was one of more than 2,000 similar events held across the country on June 14, which coincided with Flag Day and the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary.
Local organizations, including ORD2 Indivisible, Women’s March Southern Oregon, and 50501, helped coordinate the event. Demonstrators of all ages turned out under clear skies, with many families and individuals lining the sidewalks, waving to passing vehicles and encouraging civic participation.
The broader “No Kings” movement was launched as a call to uphold democratic checks and balances, with organizers expressing concern over what they describe as a growing trend toward centralized authority in national leadership. Events in other cities ranged from modest neighborhood gatherings to large marches in urban centers such as Washington, D.C., Chicago, and Los Angeles.
In Medford, the event remained peaceful throughout the day. Police conducted a few traffic stops related to vehicles disrupting the protest route, but no arrests or injuries were reported. Participants described the overall atmosphere as orderly and cooperative.
While the messaging varied across regions, organizers hoped the unifying theme of the “No Kings” protests was a reaffirmation of democratic principles, including the separation of powers and the importance of active civic participation. Organizers encouraged attendees to remain engaged in local and national politics, regardless of party affiliation.
The Medford demonstration marked one of the largest public protests in the city in recent years. As the next election season intensifies, participants indicated they plan to continue advocating for transparency, accountability, and adherence to constitutional norms.
