Babysitter Arrested in Death of 3-Year-Old Boy in Happy Camp

Happy Camp, California- A 23-year-old babysitter has been arrested in connection with the death of a 3-year-old boy in the small Siskiyou County community of Happy Camp, authorities said Monday.

Deputies with the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office responded to a medical emergency at a residence on Curly Jack Road around 5:08 p.m. on Friday, June 13, where they found an unresponsive child under the care of Marion Southard Spence of Happy Camp. The child was transported by air ambulance to Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford, and later transferred to Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) in Portland, where family members joined him.

Despite extensive medical efforts, the child died at 4:51 a.m. on June 15, according to the sheriff’s office.

Following an investigation, detectives arrested Spence on suspicion of murder, as well as multiple felony charges related to child neglect and infliction of great bodily injury. The suspect is currently being held in the Siskiyou County Jail.

The case remains under active investigation. Authorities are urging the public to be patient as they continue to gather evidence and review the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
