Motorcyclist Dies After High-Speed Pursuit Ends in Crash Into Rogue River

Merlin, Oregon- A 46-year-old man from Grants Pass died Sunday night after crashing his motorcycle into the Rogue River during a high-speed pursuit with law enforcement near Merlin, the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office said.

The incident occurred on June 8 at approximately 10:25 p.m., when a deputy attempted to stop a speeding motorcycle on Galice Road, officials said. The rider, later identified as Brock Andrew Ewers, failed to stop, prompting a pursuit outbound through Galice and past Almeda Park.

Near milepost 17, Ewers lost control of the motorcycle and went over a cliff, crashing into the river below.

Emergency responders from Rural/Metro Fire and American Medical Response (AMR) arrived on scene shortly after. A drone equipped with thermal imaging was deployed to search the river area. Josephine County Marine deputies and Rural/Metro personnel launched a raft from Almeda Park, scanning the water and riverbanks down to the Argo Recreation Site.

Despite the overnight search, the rider was not located until the next morning. Around 10:00 a.m. on June 9, rafters discovered Ewers’ body near Whiskey Creek. Recovery efforts were carried out by Bureau of Land Management River Rangers and Josephine County Search and Rescue.

The Oregon State Police are investigating the crash at the request of the Sheriff’s Office. Next of kin have been notified.

No further information has been released by officials at this time.
