Fire Danger Rises to Moderate in Rogue Valley, Beginning Saturday

Medford, Oregon– Fire danger in the Oregon Department of Forestry’s Southwest Oregon District will increase to “moderate” on Saturday, June 7, affecting 1.8 million acres across Jackson and Josephine counties.

The heightened fire risk follows a stretch of hot, dry, and windy weather that has quickly dried vegetation across the region.

With temperatures expected to reach 100 degrees and potential thunderstorms in the forecast, new public fire restrictions will take effect to reduce the risk of wildfires.

Starting Saturday, open fires—including campfire —will be banned except in designated campgrounds. The use of chainsaws and other spark-emitting equipment will be restricted between 1:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. unless proper safety precautions are in place.

Motorized vehicles will be allowed only on improved roads. Commercial truck drivers are required to carry firefighting tools, including a shovel and either a gallon of water or a fire extinguisher.

Fireworks and debris burning remain prohibited throughout the district.

Additional information is available on the Oregon Department of Forestry’s website or by contacting the Southwest Oregon District office.
