Oregon National Guard to Host Norwegian Foot March in Medford

Norwegian Foot March

Medford, Oregon- The Oregon Army National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 186th Infantry Regiment will host a Norwegian Foot March on June 8 in Medford, opening the endurance-based military challenge to both service members and civilians.

The event begins at 4 a.m. at U.S. Cellular Field, with participants stepping off an hour later for the grueling 18.6-mile (30-kilometer) route. To qualify for the official Norwegian Foot March Badge, marchers must carry a 24-pound rucksack and finish within age-based time limits ranging from 4 hours, 30 minutes to 6 hours.

“This is a unique opportunity for civilians to earn a badge that’s typically reserved for military personnel,” said 1st Lt. Ian Namu, who has overseen the unit’s training efforts. “We’re excited to share this challenge with our community.”

The march, which dates back to 1915, was developed by the Norwegian military as a test of endurance and mobility under load—key to combat readiness. Today, it is recognized internationally, and participants who complete the course in duty uniform and boots can earn the Norwegian Foot March Badge. The award comes in bronze, silver and gold, depending on how many times the challenge has been completed.

The Medford-based National Guard unit has been preparing for months, including a 6-mile training march along the Bear Creek Greenway in March, led by Namu.

Community members are also encouraged to walk the route or cheer on participants along the course.
