Medford, Oregon- A 34-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death of another man found with severe injuries outside a Lowe’s store in Medford last week, police said Wednesday.
Officers with the Medford Police Department responded around 2 a.m. Friday, April 25, to a report of a person down near the Lowe’s at the Crater Lake Plaza. There, they found Rory James Pomeroy, 36, suffering from life-threatening traumatic injuries, according to a department statement. Emergency medical personnel from Mercy Flights treated Pomeroy at the scene before transporting him to a local hospital.
Police quickly identified a potential suspect in the area, described as a fellow homeless individual also staying nearby. That person, later identified as Christopher Shane Boyce, was detained, interviewed and released later the same day due to insufficient evidence, officials said.
Later Friday, authorities were informed that Pomeroy had died of his injuries. A forensic autopsy conducted by the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office on Monday, April 28, determined the cause of death to be homicide.
Detectives recovered what is believed to be the weapon used in the assault on Tuesday, April 29, during a search of a nearby storm drain.
The following morning, April 30, at approximately 9:30 a.m., MPD detectives arrested Boyce at a residence in the 5600 block of Upton Road in Central Point. He is being held at the Jackson County Jail on charges of second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter.
The case will be forwarded to the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
Authorities say the investigation remains active and are urging anyone with information to contact the Medford Police Department. The case number is 25-6841.
