False Alarm Triggers Lockdown at South Medford High School

Medford, Oregon- April 9, 2025 — A lockdown at South Medford High School initiated around 12:20 p.m. today has been confirmed as a false alarm, according to school officials and the Medford Police Department.

The incident began when the school’s Emergency Response Button (ERB) system began emitting a chirping alert. During an effort to silence the system, it was inadvertently activated, triggering the building’s lockdown protocol.

Following a joint review by school staff and the Medford Police Department, it was confirmed that there was no threat to students or staff. The lockdown was lifted shortly afterward.

School officials stated that while the activation was accidental, it highlights the importance of having a functional emergency response system. Efforts will continue to improve training and procedures to reduce the likelihood of future disruptions.

Administrators acknowledged the stress caused by the false alarm and expressed appreciation for the cooperation of students, staff, and families. They reiterated that student safety remains the highest priority.
