Structural Damage Forces Closure of North Medford High Gym Following Snowstorm

Medford, Oregon- A structural issue at North Medford High School’s gymnasium prompted an immediate evacuation and closure yesterday afternoon after a crack formed in one of the building’s trusses. The damage, attributed to the weight of heavy snowfall from a recent storm, caused no injuries, school officials confirmed.

Today, engineers, architects, Medford Fire personnel, and Medford School District crews were on-site to assess the extent of the damage. Efforts to reduce the snow load and stabilize the structure are ongoing, though officials reported that the damage had worsened overnight.

“At this time, the building has been isolated from the rest of campus with fencing and the rest of the site remains safe for school to be in session,” a district spokesperson said.

Out of caution, crews have inspected other large-span structures throughout the district. At this time, no additional structural issues have been identified. The district stated that monitoring will continue, with official engineering assessments planned to ensure safety.

The gymnasium underwent a significant seismic upgrade last summer. Officials noted that the upgrade does not appear related to the current damage and may have helped reduce the risk of collapse.

“We are actively developing a relocation plan for activities, athletics, and PE and will communicate those details with the North Medford community as soon as possible,” the spokesperson added.

The district assured families and the community that it remains focused on resolving the issue and maintaining safety on campus. Further updates will be provided as structural assessments and repair plans progress.
