Officials Issue Plea for Volunteers to Support Severe Weather Shelter

Medford, Oregon– The City of Medford has issued a Severe Weather Event Declaration in response to forecasted temperatures dropping below 25°F or 32°F with additional precipitation or wind factors. The declaration has prompted the activation of the Rogue Valley Coordinated Organizations Active in Disasters (RVCOAD) to mobilize volunteers for emergency shelter operations.

The Medford Severe Weather Shelter, operated in collaboration with ACCESS and RVCOAD, provides essential services to unhoused community members during severe weather conditions. Volunteers are urgently needed to support shelter operations, which include distributing meals, blankets, and water while ensuring a safe and welcoming environment.

Shelter operations are led by trained ACCESS employees, with volunteers serving as critical on-site support. Tasks are designed to accommodate varying physical abilities, offering a combination of seated and standing responsibilities.

Volunteer Responsibilities:

• Distribute meals, blankets, and water to shelter guests

• Assist with shelter operations and maintain a supportive environment

• Provide general support to shelter staff

Shift Availability:

• 5 PM to 9 PM

• 9 PM to 1 AM

• 1 AM to 5 AM

• 5 AM to 9 AM

To ensure the health and safety of all participants, ACCESS provides volunteers with snacks, water, and essential sanitation supplies, including masks and gloves.

2. Schedule Shifts: ACCESS staff will contact registered volunteers to schedule shifts and provide orientation.

3. Track Volunteer Hours: Volunteers can document their service through the ORVID APP, available on Apple and Google Play stores.
