Medford, Oregon- The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has issued a Public Safety Announcement in response to moderate snowfall and overnight sub-freezing temperatures expected over the next two days. The weather conditions are forecasted to create hazardous roadways and significantly impact travel throughout the area.
Deputies have been placed under increased pressure as they respond to weather-related incidents alongside their routine calls for service. Authorities urge residents to take immediate precautions to stay safe during this winter weather event.
Advisory for Residents: Avoid Travel if Possible
Officials are advising residents to avoid driving unless absolutely necessary. Slippery and icy roads are expected to significantly increase the risk of accidents.
“We understand the inconvenience this may cause, but your safety is our utmost concern,” the Sheriff’s Office stated.
Guidelines for Essential Travel
For those who must travel, the Sheriff’s Office recommends the following precautions:
• Check Weather Forecasts: Stay informed about changing weather conditions by monitoring local news and weather apps.
• Limit Travel to Essentials: Postpone non-essential trips to reduce the number of vehicles on the road, allowing emergency responders to operate more effectively.
• Drive Slowly and Cautiously: Reduce speed significantly and increase following distance. Avoid sudden braking or steering maneuvers.
Vehicle and Roadway Preparedness
• Vehicle Maintenance: Ensure your vehicle is winter-ready by checking tire tread depth and windshield wiper functionality. Snow tires are recommended for improved traction.
• Emergency Kit: Carry essential supplies, including blankets, food, water, and a flashlight.
• Hazard Awareness: Exercise caution on bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas, which are more prone to freezing. Watch for black ice, which can be difficult to detect.
Community Safety a Priority
The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that community safety is a shared responsibility. “By taking these precautions, we can all help to ensure the safety of our community during this winter weather event,” the statement concluded.
Residents are reminded to call 911 only for emergencies. For non-emergency assistance, contact local authorities through their designated phone lines.
