Roseburg, Oregon- A Sutherlin woman died of an apparent suicide while in custody at the Douglas County Jail on Monday evening. According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy discovered the unresponsive female adult in custody at approximately 5:40 p.m. in a holding cell. The individual, identified as 38-year-old Katrina Nicole Robertson of Sutherlin, had reportedly attempted suicide.
Deputies immediately summoned emergency medical services and initiated life-saving measures. Robertson was transported by ambulance for further treatment, but despite the efforts of medical personnel, she was pronounced dead.
Sheriff John Hanlin expressed condolences to Robertson’s family, emphasizing the department’s commitment to the safety of individuals in its care. “My heartfelt condolences are extended to Ms. Robertson’s family,” Sheriff Hanlin said in a statement. “The safety and security of those in our custody is of utmost importance to me as Sheriff. In the interest of providing an independent investigation into this tragedy, I have requested the assistance of an outside agency. I wish to thank the Roseburg Police Department for assuming this investigation and conducting a thorough review of the facts.”
The Roseburg Police Department is now leading the investigation, and any further updates will be released by their office.
The incident has raised concerns regarding procedures and oversight within the jail, though officials have not yet disclosed details about the circumstances leading up to the discovery of Robertson’s condition.
