Salem, Oregon- As wildfires rage across the state and extreme weather conditions affect communities, Oregon residents are being reminded to prepare for potential power outages. These disruptions can result from wildfires and severe weather events, which may necessitate electric utilities to adjust system settings, leading to more frequent and extended outages. In certain cases, utilities might implement Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) to safeguard communities in high fire-risk areas by proactively cutting off electricity during dangerous weather conditions.
A PSPS is a critical safety measure aimed at protecting residents and communities from the threat of wildfires. Electric utilities might also need to deenergize lines to shield equipment from nearby fires or to protect personnel battling these blazes.
Prepare your homes and businesses for potential outages due to wildfires or weather incidents:
- Be Two Weeks Ready: Assemble essential supplies such as food, medical necessities, batteries, and pet supplies to sustain your family for up to two weeks during an outage or evacuation. Learn more about essential supplies.
- Medical Needs: If you have a medical condition that relies on power, register a Medical Certificate with your electricity service provider to ensure your needs are prioritized during an outage.
- Update Contact Information: Ensure your utility service provider has your current contact details to receive timely notifications by updating your account online. To identify your electric utility, visit Find Your Utility.
- Keep Devices Charged: Maintain fully charged cell phones and consider using a car-charger for electronic devices.
- Livestock Needs: Plan for livestock water needs if well pumps lose power.
- Alternative Power Plans: Develop a plan to relocate to an alternative location if necessary, or consider investing in a backup generator.
- Avoid Downed Power Lines: Steer clear of downed power lines and anything near them.
- Stay Clear of Emergency Crews: Give space to fire personnel and utility crews working to restore service.
- Emergency Lighting: Use flashlights or battery-operated lanterns instead of candles to avoid fire hazards.
- Manage Electrical Appliances: Turn off lights and unplug appliances, except for the refrigerator and freezer, to prevent a surge when power is restored. Keep one light on to signal when power returns.
- Generator Safety: Use generators safely, avoiding operation inside homes, garages, or near windows or vents to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Learn more about generator safety.
- Check on Neighbors: Ensure elderly neighbors or those with special needs receive assistance.
- Report Outages: Contact your electricity service provider to report an outage—do not call 911.
- Evacuation Protocol: There’s no need to shut off natural gas when evacuating.
- Post-Outage Operation: If natural gas appliances malfunction after power restoration, contact your natural gas service provider.
- Restoring Gas Service: If natural gas service is shut off, do not attempt to turn it back on yourself. Contact your provider.
- Gas Leaks: If you smell natural gas, evacuate immediately and call 911.
By taking these proactive steps, Oregon residents can better navigate the challenges posed by wildfires and extreme weather, ensuring safety and preparedness for potential power outages.
