Upper Applegate Fire Mapped at 756 Acres, 35% Directly Lined

Applegate, Oregon – Firefighters have successfully completed 100% of the perimeter lines around the Upper Applegate Fire. These lines include both direct and indirect measures. Despite the progress, only 35% of the fire line is directly holding the blaze as of tonight, with resources focused on maintaining the fire within its current footprint amid hot and windy conditions.

Firefighters conducted on-ground assessments today, using GPS to map the fire at 756 acres. An infrared flight is scheduled for tonight to confirm this data.

Efforts today included securing water access to the southern portion of the fire, enabling downhill water flow to assist firefighting efforts. Contingency lines were also reinforced. The hot, windy weather led to a few small spot fires near the top of a ridge, but firefighters quickly contained and began mopping them up.

The fire continues to present hazards such as heat, wind, falling trees and rocks, and steep terrain. Currently, over 160 personnel are assigned to the incident, including five 20-person crews, three engines, four bulldozers, three water tenders, and numerous overhead staff. Aircraft support will continue as needed until nightfall.

Goals for the overnight shift include strengthening existing lines and mopping up hotspots and today’s spot fires.

Level 2 – BE SET evacuation notices remain in effect for Zones JAC-434 and JAC-436, as issued by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and Jackson County Emergency Management. Detailed information about evacuation zones is available at protect.genasys.com.

The Upper Applegate Fire affects private land as well as Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and U.S. Forest Service (USFS) land within the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. The fire was first reported on the afternoon of Thursday, June 20, and the cause is under investigation.
