Medford, Oregon- William Thomas Gillespie, 39, of Cave Junction, received a federal prison sentence of 173 months on Thursday for unlawful possession of methamphetamine and 12 firearms while under state supervision. This sentence reflects the seriousness of Gillespie’s criminal behavior and its impact on community safety.
The sentencing was part of a coordinated effort involving the Rogue Area Drug Enforcement Team (RADE), whose persistence was crucial in bringing Gillespie to justice. According to court records, Gillespie was apprehended in April 2020 in White City, with 174 grams of methamphetamine. A subsequent search of his residence uncovered additional illegal firearms, including stolen weapons and one with an obliterated serial number.
Gillespie’s history of criminal activity, which included drug distribution and prior firearm-related offenses, factored significantly into the severity of the sentence. Jonathan Blais, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Seattle Field Division, emphasized the importance of deterring individuals like Gillespie, whose actions pose a direct threat to community well-being.
Despite being released pending trial in June 2021, Gillespie absconded from supervised release in January 2023, further underscoring his disregard for legal authority. His subsequent arrest in September 2023 in Bandon, marked the conclusion of a pursuit involving multiple law enforcement agencies.
This case underscores the critical role of collaborative law enforcement efforts, such as RADE, in combatting drug-related crime and ensuring public safety.
