Oregon and IRS to Begin Processing Tax Returns January 29

Portland, Oregon – The Oregon Department of Revenue has revealed important information regarding the processing of 2023 state income tax returns. Starting January 29, 2024, the department will begin processing e-filed returns, aligning with the IRS’s commencement of federal return processing. Paper filed returns are set to be processed from mid-February onwards.

E-filed returns will be handled in the order of submission, but the department will refrain from issuing personal income tax refunds until after February 15. This deliberate delay is part of the department’s ongoing tax fraud prevention efforts, ensuring that claimed amounts align with employers’ reports on Forms W-2 and 1099.

Emphasizing efficiency, the department highlights e-filing as the quickest method for taxpayers to receive their refunds. On average, those opting for e-file and direct deposit can expect their refunds two weeks earlier than those choosing paper returns and checks.

The department encourages taxpayers to take simple steps in the coming weeks to ease the preparation of their 2023 tax returns in 2024.
