Be Alert of Potential Landslides in Southern Oregon Coast Area

Medford, Oregon- The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for areas of south-central Oregon, including the south-central coast, effective from Saturday evening to late Monday evening. The watch is prompted by an impending storm system set to bring abundant moisture, posing potential risks such as landslides and debris flows, according to the Oregon Department of Geology.

Scheduled to arrive Friday night through Saturday night, heavy rain accompanying this storm may trigger landslides in regions with steep terrain and lead to debris flows, especially in proximity to areas affected by recent wildfires.

The Oregon Department of Geology wants the public to be aware of possible debris flows, described as rapidly moving and extremely destructive landslides, can transport boulders and logs in a fast-moving slurry down steep hillsides and narrow canyons, potentially covering distances of a mile or more at alarming speeds. Given the swiftness of these flows, people, structures, and roads situated below steep slopes or near canyon mouths face serious risks.

Residents within the watch area are advised to take the following precautions:

  • Listen for Warning Signs: Be vigilant for unusual sounds like trees cracking or boulders colliding, indicating the movement of debris. Small trickles of mud or debris may precede larger landslides. If danger is perceived, evacuate promptly.
  • Monitor Water Conditions: If streams or creeks suddenly turn muddy, or if the water flow experiences sudden increases or decreases, it signals potential upstream disruptions. Evacuate the area promptly, as a debris flow may be imminent downstream.
  • Exercise Caution While Traveling: Assume roads are unsafe, especially at night. Be attentive when driving, as road embankments may fail, leading to the release of rocks and debris onto roadways.

For the latest updates and information, residents are encouraged to visit National Weather Service Alerts. Additional resources on landslide and debris flow preparedness can be found at Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries.

With the potential risks associated with the upcoming weather conditions, it is crucial for residents to prioritize safety and take necessary precautions to mitigate the impact of potential landslides and debris flows. Stay informed, stay safe.
