Smoke From Controlled Burn Expected to Impact Ashland Plaza

Ashland, Oregon – Beginning today, the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest is initiating a controlled burn as part of the ongoing efforts for the Ashland Forest Resiliency Project. The targeted burn area is situated along Winburn Ridge, positioned above Reeder Reservoir. Trained crews will execute this operation over the next few days and into the weekend, aiming to mitigate wildfire risks in the region.

Residents and visitors should be aware that smoke is anticipated to affect the town during evening hours, with prominent areas such as Lithia Park, the downtown district, and streets along Ashland Creek, including Oak and Helman, likely to be impacted. Daytime conditions might witness smoke drifting southward, potentially influencing trails and roads in the upper watershed. However, favorable weather conditions, including expected rain, will assist in dispersing the smoke, presenting an opportune time for reducing wildfire hazards.

For those seeking updates on the controlled burn’s progress, it is advisable to sign up for notifications. Assistance in this regard can be found by emailing afrpartners@ashland.or.us or leaving a message at (541) 552-2218.

Residents are urged to take necessary precautions when smoke is in the air. In the evening, it is recommended to close windows, and individuals sensitive to smoke should remain indoors. The use of HEPA quality air purifiers is encouraged, especially if air quality experiences a decline.

By proactively managing controlled burns, officials say these initiatives aim to curb the threat of wildfires and safeguard the region’s ecosystems.
