Authorities Open US199 for Limited Commercial Traffic

In a collaborative effort to address the ongoing challenges posed by the Smith River Complex Fire, multiple agencies have implemented a limited reopening of US199 for commercial traffic. On Friday, September 1, 2023, at 4:00 am, the California Highway Patrol (CHP), California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), Oregon State Police (OSP), and Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) joined forces with the Pacific Northwest Incident Management Team 13 and Southwest Incident Management Team 2 to enact this critical measure.

The decision, though cautious, is a significant step toward resuming some semblance of normalcy for commercial traffic along this vital route. However, it comes with specific restrictions and considerations aimed at ensuring safety.

Limited Access for Commercial Traffic

The limited reopening of US199 is exclusively for commercial traffic. This category encompasses commercial vehicles engaged in transporting property for commerce, facilitating the exchange of goods and services between businesses. The reopening will be facilitated on both northbound and southbound lanes of the highway.

  • Northbound Traffic: Commercial vehicles heading north will undergo screening at the Pioneer Road closure point. Once cleared, they will be piloted from Patrick’s Creek to Oregon Mountain Road South.
  • Southbound Traffic: For commercial traffic traveling south, screening will occur at the ODOT closure point in O’Brien. After screening, these vehicles will be guided from Oregon Mountain Road South to Patrick’s Creek.

This service will be available 24/7 until the entire US199 is deemed safe for unrestricted traffic.

Safety Remains Priority

While this limited reopening is a welcome development, it’s essential to emphasize that the Smith River Complex Fire remains highly unpredictable. Fire personnel, Caltrans teams, and construction crews continue their efforts in combating the fires and repairing the damaged highway. Motorists are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution and patience when driving through this area, as these fire teams are still actively engaged in their crucial work.

Future Reopening Plans

The reopening of US199 to all traffic remains a primary goal. The California Highway Patrol and California Department of Transportation have established plans and are fully prepared to facilitate the safe passage of all travelers once the highway is certified as safe for general use.

However, it’s important to note that these plans are subject to change should safety concerns for the public and personnel arise.
