MEDFORD, Ore. (Jul. 21, 2026)— The National Weather Service in Medford has issued a Fire Weather Watch for much of southern Oregon from late Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening as thunderstorms are expected to bring abundant lightning to dry fuels, increasing the risk of new wildfire starts.
The watch covers Fire Weather Zones 617, 621, 622, 623, 624 and 625, including areas along and east of the Cascade Range, the western foothills and slopes of the Cascades, and the Siskiyou Mountains.
Forecasters said thunderstorms are expected to move generally north to northeast at 15 to 20 mph. While many storms are expected to produce rainfall, dry lightning strikes are possible outside the main precipitation cores, creating the potential for new fire ignitions.
Officials warned that abundant lightning on dry vegetation could lead to numerous new fire starts that may spread rapidly and overwhelm initial firefighting resources. Isolated thunderstorm outflow wind gusts up to 45 mph are also possible, which could contribute to rapid fire growth.
Residents are urged to follow all fire restrictions and avoid activities that could produce sparks. Emergency officials also recommend preparing a go kit with essential items, important documents and medications, as well as ensuring vehicles have a full tank of fuel in case evacuations become necessary.
A Fire Weather Watch means critical fire weather conditions are possible but not yet certain. The National Weather Service said the watch could be upgraded to a Red Flag Warning if confidence in hazardous conditions increases.
