MEDFORD, Ore. (Jul. 21, 2026) — The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for portions of southern and south-central Oregon from late Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening, citing the threat of abundant lightning over critically dry fuels that could spark new wildfires.
The warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday for fire weather zones 617, 621, 622, 623, 624 and 625, which include the Umpqua National Forest, Southern Oregon Cascades, eastern Rogue Valley, Klamath Basin and surrounding areas.
Forecasters say thunderstorms are expected to develop and move from southwest to northeast at about 20 mph. While many storms are expected to produce rainfall, lightning strikes may occur outside the heavier rain cores, creating the potential for new fire starts. Isolated wind gusts of up to 45 mph could also accompany storms, increasing the risk of rapid fire spread.
The warning comes as firefighters continue battling several large wildfires across Southern Oregon, including the East Evans Creek Fire in Jackson County, where thousands of personnel remain assigned. Fire managers are closely monitoring Wednesday’s forecast, as lightning could ignite additional fires and strain firefighting resources.
A Red Flag Warning is issued when weather conditions—including dry fuels, lightning, low humidity or gusty winds—create conditions favorable for rapid wildfire ignition and growth. Officials urge residents to avoid activities that could spark fires, follow all local fire restrictions and stay informed through local emergency alerts and weather forecasts.
