CHEMULT, Ore. (Jun. 24, 2026) — A 67-year-old Klamath Falls man was killed Monday night after being struck by a commercial truck while attempting to retrieve his dog from a roadway near Chemult, according to Oregon State Police.

Troopers responded at approximately 10:07 p.m. June 22 to a fatal vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash on Highway 97 near milepost 200 in Klamath County.

A preliminary investigation found that a white Freightliner commercial motor vehicle was traveling southbound on the highway when it struck pedestrian Scott Henry Beggio, 67, of Klamath Falls. Investigators said Beggio was standing in the southbound lane of travel and is believed to have been attempting to catch his dog after it ran into the roadway.

Beggio was pronounced dead at the scene. No information on the dogs condition was released by authorities at this time.

The Freightliner was operated by Larry Dotson, 44, of Vicksburg, Mississippi. State police reported that Dotson was not injured in the crash.

The section of Highway 97 was impacted for approximately five hours while investigators examined the scene and cleared the roadway.

The Oregon State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is leading the investigation. The specialized team investigates fatal and serious-injury crashes across the state and uses advanced reconstruction techniques to determine the circumstances surrounding collisions.

Oregon State Police were assisted at the scene by the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office, Chemult Rural Fire Protection District and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
