Firefighters Halt Spread of “Carney Flat Fire” Near Prospect at 23 Acres

PROSPECT, Ore. (May. 10, 2026) — Firefighters with the Oregon Department of Forestry stopped the spread of a wildfire southeast of Prospect overnight after crews responded to what became known as the Carney Flat Fire, officials said Sunday.

The fire was initially estimated at about six acres when crews arrived Saturday night. Following overnight firefighting efforts, personnel were able to build containment line around the blaze and halt its growth at 23 acres, according to ODF.

Multiple firefighting resources remained assigned to the incident Sunday as crews continued mop-up operations. Officials said firefighters had laid hose across most of the fire area to improve water access while extinguishing remaining hot spots.

ODF said firefighters will remain on scene until the fire is fully mopped up and all hot spots are extinguished.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Officials said no additional updates are expected unless conditions significantly change.
