RURAL TALENT, Ore. (Feb. 18, 2026) — A 63-year-old Central Point man was found dead Sunday afternoon near the summit of the Wagner Butte Trail, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded at approximately 3:30 p.m. Feb. 15 to a report of a deceased adult male at an elevation of about 7,000 feet in steep, mountainous terrain outside Talent.
The man was identified as Michael James Beagle, 63, of Central Point. Authorities extended condolences to his family and loved ones.
Sheriff’s Office Medical Examiner detectives determined Beagle died as the result of a medical event. No suspicious circumstances were observed, and officials said no further investigation is planned.
Recovery efforts required Search and Rescue deputies and volunteers to operate in challenging winter conditions, including snow, ice, high elevation and an approaching storm. Teams worked until after sundown Sunday to help ensure other hikers in the area exited safely as weather conditions deteriorated.
Search and Rescue crews returned Monday morning to recover Beagle. After approximately 10 hours in the field — navigating more than 2,000 feet of elevation gain over a 10-mile round trip in snow and strong winds — volunteers safely recovered him and transferred him to a local funeral home.
The Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue program is comprised of more than 100 trained volunteers who assist in difficult and often hazardous conditions throughout the county.
Beagle served as alumni director at Southern Oregon University. In a statement, the university said, “Mike left us while doing what he loved most, exploring the mountains and forests of Southern Oregon. We will carry forward his warmth, his humor, and his unwavering love for SOU.”
Authorities said no additional information is available for release.
