ROSEBURG, Ore. (Jan. 5, 2026) ) — A 60-year-old man was killed in a stabbing Friday morning in Roseburg, and a 16-year-old suspect has been taken into custody, authorities said.
Roseburg police said officers were dispatched around 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 2, 2026, to the 200 block of Southeast Pine Street, an area known locally as “The Point,” after receiving a report of a stabbing. When officers arrived, they found James Wade Gage lying off a nearby bike path with a single stab wound.
Officers and medical personnel attempted lifesaving measures, but Gage was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The suspect, identified as a 16-year-old male, fled the area and was later located in the South Umpqua River, according to authorities. After a brief standoff, the juvenile was taken into custody without further incident.
The juvenile was lodged at the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center on charges of criminally negligent homicide, menacing, third-degree escape and unlawful use of a weapon. Because of the suspect’s age, authorities did not release additional identifying information.
The Roseburg Police Department said it was assisted in the response and investigation by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Douglas County District Attorney’s Office, Oregon State Police, the Douglas County Interagency Narcotics Team, Roseburg Fire Department and Umpqua Valley Ambulance.
Police said no further details are being released at this time as the investigation continues.
