Fuel Spill Cleanup to Cause Delays on I-5 South of Myrtle Creek

MYRTLE CREEK, Ore. (Dec. 19, 2025) — Travelers on Interstate 5 south of Myrtle Creek can expect delays beginning early Friday as crews clean up a gasoline spill from a tanker truck crash earlier this week.

The crash occurred Wednesday afternoon when a tanker truck overturned in the southbound lanes of I-5 at Exit 103 near Tri City and Riddle, spilling fuel and forcing the interstate to close for several hours. Officials said no waterways were affected by the spill.

Cleanup work is scheduled to begin at 4:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 19, and is expected to last several days. During that time, southbound traffic will be reduced to one lane through the work zone, while northbound travelers should expect an inside shoulder closure.

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality is coordinating the cleanup with the help of an environmental contractor. Officials said crews will not know the full extent of the contamination until assessments begin Friday, and the work could take longer if pavement replacement is required.

Drivers are urged to slow down through the area, watch for workers and equipment on the roadway, and allow extra space for southbound vehicles merging onto I-5 from Exit 103.

With holiday travel expected to increase traffic volumes, motorists should plan for congestion and allow extra travel time. Up-to-date road conditions are available at TripCheck.com.
