MEDFORD, Ore. (Dec 15, 2025) — Medford Public Works crews are preparing for the upcoming winter season by servicing equipment, stockpiling sanding materials and training employees on snowplows, sanders and chainsaws, city officials said.
The city has significantly expanded its winter response capabilities since recent severe weather events. While Medford did not own a snowplow in 2022, it now has six, along with newer sander inserts and a deicer to improve response during snow and ice conditions. Public Works has also established a contract for on-call supplemental snowplow and deicing services to assist during larger or prolonged storms.
During winter weather events, priority will be given to critical routes, including main arterials, collector streets that connect neighborhoods to major roadways, hospitals and school bus routes. Snowplows will be deployed once one to two inches of slush accumulate on the valley floor, with heavier snowfall typically expected in the foothills. A full map of critical routes is available through the city.
City officials are also urging residents to take steps now to prepare for winter weather.

Hazards such as downed trees, icy conditions or flooding in the public right-of-way can be reported to Public Works at 541-774-2600.
Officials recommend building an emergency kit that includes water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, blankets and essential medications. Residents should also prepare their homes by clearing gutters and nearby storm drains when it is safe to do so, protecting exposed pipes and understanding how to safely operate alternative heat sources.
Drivers are advised to ready their vehicles by checking tires, windshield wipers and antifreeze levels, and by keeping warm clothing, snacks and a phone charger in their cars. Travel during storms should be avoided when possible, and motorists who must drive are urged to slow down and give snowplows plenty of space to work.
The city also encourages residents to check on neighbors, particularly older adults, people with disabilities or anyone who may need extra assistance during periods of cold and severe winter weather.
