Pedestrian Dies After Being Hit by Vehicle That Fled Scene in Douglas County

Douglas County, Oregon– A Canyonville man was struck and killed early Sunday morning in a hit-and-run crash on Highway 42 near Winston, according to the Oregon State Police.

Troopers responded around 1:08 a.m. on October 12 to reports of a pedestrian hit near milepost 76, close to Grant Smith Road and the Taco Bell restaurant.

Investigators said the pedestrian, identified as 30-year-old Dustin Rios of Canyonville, was in the lane of travel for an unknown reason when he was struck by an eastbound vehicle that fled the scene. Despite lifesaving efforts, Rios was pronounced dead at the scene.

Evidence recovered indicates the suspect vehicle is likely a 2006–2011 black Honda Civic with damage to the driver’s side mirror. Investigators also found a transparent adhesive window visor believed to have come from the driver’s side door. The car was last seen traveling eastbound toward Interstate 5 and may have continued northbound.

The highway was closed for approximately four hours during the on-scene investigation.

OSP asks anyone with information about the crash or the involved vehicle to contact the Southern Command dispatch center at 800-442-2068 or *OSP (*677) from a mobile phone. Callers should reference case number SP25-433741.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Winston Police Department, Douglas County Emergency Services, Douglas County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Oregon Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.

The Oregon State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU), which investigates fatal and critical injury crashes statewide, is leading the investigation.
