Portland Woman Faces Felony After Allegedly Punching Federal Officer at ICE Facility

Portland, Oregon- A Portland woman appeared in federal court Wednesday after prosecutors say she struck a federal officer while being detained near a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in South Portland.

Katherine Meagan Vogel, 39, is charged by criminal complaint with felony assault of a federal officer, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon.

Court documents say Vogel was detained on the evening of Sept. 30 after she poured red paint onto the driveway of the ICE building. Federal officers escorted her inside for questioning related to depredation of government property. While being processed, Vogel allegedly punched one of the officers in the jaw with a closed fist.

She was arrested on the assault charge and later released on conditions pending further court proceedings, prosecutors said.

“Violence and property damage at the ICE building or any other federal building will not be tolerated,” U.S. Attorney Scott E. Bradford said in a statement. “If you assault a federal law enforcement officer or damage federal property, you will be arrested and federally prosecuted.”

Since June 13, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has charged 28 defendants with federal crimes tied to activity at the Portland ICE facility, including assaulting officers, failing to comply with lawful orders, and damaging government property.

Assaulting a federal officer carries a maximum penalty of eight years in prison.
