Drone Assists in Arrest of Armed Suspect Following I-5 Shooting

Ashland, Oregon- A man who allegedly fired shots on Interstate 5 near Ashland early July 19 was safely taken into custody after law enforcement used a drone to locate him in a wooded area, authorities said.

At approximately 5:19 a.m., officers from the Ashland Police Department, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, and Oregon State Police responded to reports of a man discharging a firearm along the interstate. The suspect was later reported to have fired at responding officers before fleeing the scene on foot.

Due to limited visibility and concerns about a possible ambush, officers requested assistance from a drone operator. The Eagle Point Police Department recently acquired a drone and officer training through a grant from City County Insurance. Senior Officer Marc Slagle, the department’s designated drone pilot, was on duty and responded to the scene.

The suspect had been seen descending an embankment and was no longer visible to officers. The drone was deployed to safely search the area from above. It located the suspect, who began to raise his hands and surrender upon noticing the drone overhead.

Officers and deputies used an armored vehicle to approach the suspect and took him into custody without further incident.

Law enforcement agencies noted that drones have been used in other situations, including searches for missing persons and evidence recovery. Officials said the incident highlights how shared resources and interagency cooperation can enhance safety and effectiveness during high-risk operations.

The Oregon State Police is handling the case.
