Phoenix Oregon Police

Phoenix, Oregon- An armed man was arrested Thursday evening on Interstate 5 near Phoenix after police say he pointed a firearm at vehicles and later discharged a round when the weapon struck the ground.

At 5:56 p.m. on June 6, Phoenix Police Department officers responded to assist Oregon State Police with reports of a man standing in the middle of the interstate near mile marker 25, armed and pointing a firearm at passing cars.

Upon arrival, officers observed the man “standing in the middle of I-5 and was observed acting highly agitated and uncooperative with law enforcement and was ignoring officer commands.”

Police said the man eventually walked back to a nearby vehicle parked on the shoulder, “and drew a firearm from his waistband and tossed it, resulting in the firearm discharging a round from the gun when it struck the ground.”

Officers moved in quickly and took the man into custody, though police said he “continued to resist arrest for an extended period of time.”

He was transported by Mercy Flights to a local hospital for evaluation. “One of our officers rode with the ambulance to keep the staff safe before OSP assumed primary on the incident.”

“Phoenix PD officers fearlessly confronted the threat and prevented any harm to human life.” According to police, from the time officers arrived to the time they began taking the suspect into custody, “it was a total of 1m48s.”

“Our officers quickly and efficiently created an arrest team to safely prevent any further danger to the community and we commend them and everyone else on scene for their actions.”

Authorities also acknowledged help from surrounding agencies, writing, “Also shoutout to City of Talent Police Department and the Jackson County Sheriff Oregon for their important assistance.”
