Eagle Point, Oregon- A stretch of Oregon 234 (Sams Valley Highway) near Eagle Point will close around the clock for about a week starting Wednesday, June 25, as crews work to repair a section of road that began sinking after winter storms.
The closure will take place between Modoc Road and Dodge Road at milepost 15.1, where ground settling has caused significant damage. The Oregon Department of Transportation said extensive reconstruction is required to stabilize the roadway.
During the full closure, traffic will be detoured via Dodge Road and Antioch Road. Travelers can also use Modoc or Antioch roads south to Table Rock Road for connections to OR 140 and OR 62 in White City. Officials warn that congestion is likely along the detour and on nearby routes. Drivers are urged to use caution, allow extra travel time, or avoid the area altogether by taking alternate routes.
Following the full closure, crews may implement single-lane closures with flaggers as work wraps up. The project is expected to be completed by Wednesday, July 2.
The damage stems from severe winter storms earlier this year, which caused the roadway to sink. While temporary repairs have been made in recent months, geologists later discovered voids beneath the surface. Crews will excavate 20 to 30 feet below the pavement to remove compromised material before rebuilding and repaving the road.
Until the closure begins, the affected section remains open with signs, traffic cones, and a reduced speed limit of 35 mph. Officials ask motorists to drive carefully and watch for sunken pavement.
