Grants Pass Resting Area Camper Arrested on Arson-Related Charges

Grants Pass, Oregon- A resident of the A Street resting area in Grants Pass was arrested Tuesday on arson-related charges after authorities say he intentionally set a fire that damaged city property.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the city-sanctioned homeless site around 5:10 p.m. Monday after reports of a fire near the perimeter of the area. When officers arrived, they observed individuals attempting to extinguish the blaze using water bottles. The fire had ignited a tarp and spread to nearby fencing.

According to the Grants Pass Police Department, the fire destroyed approximately eight feet of city-owned privacy screening attached to a fence bordering the area. No injuries were reported.

Following an on-scene investigation, Sgt. Nieminen of the department’s Community Response Team identified Jack Doak, 35, as the individual responsible for starting the fire. Police say Doak is a camper residing at the resting area.

He was arrested Tuesday and booked into the Josephine County Jail on charges of second-degree criminal mischief and reckless burning.

The A Street resting area is designated by the city as a temporary site for individuals experiencing homelessness.
